An arts centre in an Oxfordshire town has closed for a second time after flooding, just one month on from reopening from the last disaster.

The Mill Arts Centre in Banbury is based in the town’s old watermill, and was transformed in 1990 into a cultural hub, hosting a varied programme of creative events, performances and workshops.

Though beautiful, it’s canal-side heritage building has caused the registered charity repeated difficulties and disruptions.

The Mill closed on Monday this week as the Storm Bert flooding swept across Banbury and reached its first floor.

In an update on Monday, it said: “Like many in the local area, we have unfortunately been affected by the recent flooding. All activities taking place in the building today and tomorrow will be cancelled.”

A spokesperson for the centre said on Thursday (November 27) added: “Further to our update about the flooding at The Mill, now that the floodwaters are starting to recede, we are able to update further regarding plans for this week.

“We've now confirmed that all activities taking place in The Mill this week (until Sunday 1st December) will be rescheduled or relocated, and the building remains closed to the public.

“Thank you for your patience and support and we look forward to updating you further soon.”

This follows the reopening of the centre just last month, after it was forced to shut in February this year when previous flooding caused damage to the stage and floor.

When it reopened Andrew Lister, chief executive of the venue, explained that extensive work was completed to not just fix the damage, but prevent it from reoccurring with safety measures and resilient materials.

Unfortunately, this week’s floodwaters overpowered the building.

Residents expressed their sadness that the Mill has had to close once again, but also their frustration.

One wrote: “I’m so sorry you keep suffering from flooding. Surely it’s time for a new location? I hope you get through it quickly and easily.”

Another suggested a purpose-built performance space would be more reliable. They said: “The Mill Arts Centre is quirky but proving to be no longer fit for purpose and must not be very profitable.

“We are lucky to have the Mill but only if it’s operational.”
