Rail stations in Oxfordshire are among the most used and the least used in the South East.

The Office for Rail and Road has estimated station usage based on the number of entries and exits between April 2023 and March 2024.

Oxford Station came out as the fourth most used station in the region with 6.8million entries and exits.

The top three were Gatwick Airport followed by Brighton and Reading stations.

An upgrade by National Rail initiated in 2023 with a completion date yet to be announced is likely to increase passengers further with increased services, including three additional passenger trains per hour.

Meanwhile Finstock, Ascott under Wychwood and Combe on the Cotswold Line in West Oxfordshire were in the top 10 least used stations in the south east.

Finstock had 1,112 entries and exits, Ascott under Wychwood had 1,392 and Combe had 1,554 entries and exits.

The Cotswold Line Taskforce, which was founded in 2017, proposes to transform the railway, doubling the track between North Oxford, Hanborough, Evesham and Pershore with two new platforms at Hanborough and Pershore before 2030.

The impact of the new Elizabeth line, which has 41 stations across three separate railways including Reading to Paddington, drove massive increases in station usage.
