An Olympic gold medallist will countdown a town's Christmas lights switch-on.

British swimmer Kieran Bird from Bicester will join the town's mayor, Damien Maguire, on Saturday, November 30 for the Christmas lights switch-on in Bicester town centre.

Throughout the weekend the Christmas Market will be open on Sheep Street, offering festive shopping and food. 

The market will take place from 10am until 7pm on Saturday and on Sunday (December 1) it will take place from 10am until 5pm.

Organisers say it will be a "community celebration that brings everyone together in the heart of Bicester" and "the perfect way to make memories with family and friends".

The festive stalls will offer a "delightful array" of Christmas gifts from local businesses, handmade goods, street food and festive drinks. 

A bar at the marketsA bar at the markets (Image: Contributed) The festivities will kick off in Market Square at 4pm with a performance from Stages Theatrical and characters Sparky and Sprite who will bring the Christmas story to life with a "captivating performance". 

The Christmas lights switch-on will begin at 6pm.

Following this there will be Christmas carols and music until 7pm.

The event has previously attracted hundreds of people to attend. 

On Sunday there will be a live DJ playing Christmas classics throughout the day, creating a "joyful soundtrack" for shoppers. At 12.30pm, a local choir will perform.

Entry to the Christmas Market will be free.
