A range of festive events are set to be held in Oxford's Covered Market this Christmas to mark its 250th year.

Throughout the year, a series of events have been arranged to celebrate the market's milestone, including the creation of anniversary posters, a special Easter egg hunt, and a May Morning event which featured folk music and early openings.

There have also been pedestrian-friendly changes to Market Street, a birthday celebration with live entertainment, and a children's market trail with the Tiny Ideas Festival.

The year-long celebration is now set to culminate with a series of festive events during the Christmas season.

"This year, as we come to the end of its special anniversary year, I'm pleased to see a festive programme that honours the magic of the market’s past and present, and looks to its future."

Among the events will be 'Breakfast with Santa', scheduled to take place on Saturday, November 16.

Part of the Christmas Lights Festival, it is set to return after its success last year, with Santa making an appearance in the market's central square from 10am until midday.

Free to attend, it will be a meet and greet type event, with Santa roaming around, rather than an organised photo session.

Children attending the event must be accompanied by an adult.

They will offer a variety of artisan gifts, decorations, and produce, with the market's bars also open for business.

The market also recently launched the final in its series of special edition posters marking the historic year.

The Christmas poster features market scenes from Christmases past, bringing a festive feel to the special design.

The council has worked with local designer Bigtop Design on the series and residents will be able to see the final version in bus stops and poster sites around the city.

The market's Christmas tree will double as a wish tree this year, where visitors can write their wishes for the market's next 250 years and tie them to the tree.

The council plans to end the year of celebration with a cake-cutting ceremony on the market's official birthday.

Details of this event will be shared on the Covered Market and Oxford City Council's social media channels.
