Oxford United is enjoying life in the Championship after promotion in the League One Play-Off final, but how did the club begin long before the Kassam Stadium was built?
The Oxford Mail has looked back through our archives at pictures of the club’s team in the early 1960s.
Founded as Headington Football Club in 1893, the U’s adopted the name we know and love today in 1960, when it became a professional club.
In 1961, the newly professional club won the Southern League championship twice.

After another record-breaking season in 1962, Oxford United was elected to the Football League.
