Oxford University has offered a look inside the Bodleian Library with new photos on its 422nd anniversary.

The Bodleian Library originally opened to scholars back in 1602 making it 422 years ago today (Friday, November 8).

Founded by Sir Thomas Bodley, it is one of the oldest libraries in Europe and is the main research library of the university.

With more than 13 million printed items, it is the second-largest library in Britain coming behind only the British Library.

A statement by the University of Oxford earlier on Friday morning said: “On this day in 1602, the Bodleian Library first opened its doors to scholars.

“Happy birthday, Bodleian Library.”

The statement was accompanied by four great photos from the site including three of the interior and an extra of the exterior courtyard.

Known to Oxford scholars as "Bodley" or "the Bod", it is mainly used as a reference library as, in general, documents may not be removed from the reading rooms.

Commenters shared their passion for the historic library by responding to the University of Oxford's original online statement on Friday.

"The best library in the world," said one person.

Another commenter added: "Who knows how many thirsty seekers of knowledge have flown with the wings of knowledge and will continue to fly with the wings of knowledge in the future too.

"Heartiest wishes to this ocean of knowledge on his birthday."
