Oxford residents looked to the skies after a National Grid helicopter hovered over the city.

The sound of the propellers could be heard across the city with reports of sounds being heard as far as Osney Mead.

Spotted hovering low above properties in Iffley and South Hinksey, the helicopter was confirmed to be from the National Grid.

The aircraft had set off from Brackley in Northamptonshire at 10.49am and continued to hover over Oxford once it reached the city for five minutes.

“The sound was deafening,” said one nearby resident.

“Helicopters often pass by overhead but we don’t normally get helicopters that just stay in the air though.”

The Oxford Mail has approached National Grid for further details and comment.
