A local cycle campaign group is calling for more safety measures to be implemented following a serious crash in Summertown.

The incident occurred when a 17-year-old schoolboy was riding his bicycle in Banbury Road in Summertown at 8.16am on Monday, November 4.

He was involved in a collision with a motorcycle between the junctions of Beechcroft Road and Oakthorpe Road and the biker allegedly left the scene.

The boy was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Four people have been arrested in connection with the incident.

Cyclox is calling on Oxfordshire County Council to make to make 'urgent changes' in Summertown to 'ensure the future safety of cycle riders'.

Oxfordshire County Council said there were 11 injury collisions in 2023 along the entire length of Banbury Road.

The council said it "always" records and monitors the sites of serious collisions to see what can be done to improve safety.

A spokesperson for Cyclox said: "We in Cyclox were horrified to hear about the terrible life threatening injures that the 17-year-old suffered.

"Our hearts go out to the young man and his family and wish him a speedy and full recovery."

The group is calling for symbols to be repainted in the middle of the carriageway in the section of Banbury Road that "lacks" cycle lanes.

Cyclox says it also wants to see signs installed stating 'motorists do not overtake cyclists' at each end of the stretch by the shops, as well as 20mph speed limits extended to cover the junction with Marston Ferry Road.

The group is also calling for improvements to the parallel off-road route to "make it easy to access, direct, well designed, connected with schools and safe".

A spokesperson for Cyclox said: "The other important approach is to reduce traffic volumes.

"We are urging the county council to implement the plans in the Central Oxfordshire Travel Plan, which include traffic filters, zero emission zone and workplace parking levy, as soon as the Botley Road Bridge is opened."

In response to this, a spokesperson for Oxfordshire County Council said: "Our thoughts are with the injured cyclist and his friends and family at this time.

"We always record and monitor the sites of serious collisions to see what can be done to improve safety, as well noting the results of any police investigation after one may have taken place.

"Our Vision Zero team works closely with Cyclox on cycling safety matters and we always welcome their input."

A 14-year-old boy has been released without charge, while three others, a 50-year-old man, 41-year-old man and 37-year-old woman, all from Oxford, have been released under investigation.

On Friday (November 8) officers issued an appeal for the public’s help in tracing Nazim Kacem, who is 29-years-old, as it is believed he may have vital information relating to the incident.
