Pet owners are being urged to plan ahead for bonfire night to help their animals stay calm.
Experts at Go.Compare pet insurance suggest that proactive measures, such as routine changes, distraction techniques, and calming medication, can make a significant difference.
According to the PDSA, 41 per cent of dog owners and 30 per cent of cat owners believe their pets are scared of the fireworks on bonfire night.
Rhys Jones, pet insurance expert at Go.Compare, said: "While fireworks night—and the days around it—are a time of celebration for many, they can also be nerve-wracking for our pets.
"As well as causing them anxiety, some pets may even suffer accidents and injuries due to fireworks, as they try to escape away from the perceived danger."
He advises pet owners to alter their pets' routines in advance, such as taking earlier walks while it's still light outside.
He also suggests keeping cats and dogs inside each evening to protect them from the bright lights and noise.
For pets showing extreme anxiety, Mr Jones recommends consulting a vet for possible calming medication or advice on pet anxiety products.
He highlighted tips on how to keep cats and dogs calm on fireworks night itself: block out the noise, keep them in, provide distractions, give space if they need it, and consider calming products.
