Major plans for another new lab have been submitted for an Oxford University campus.

The three-storey building is proposed to be part of the university's Old Road Campus in Headington.

The scheme includes a substation building, cycle storage building and associated landscaping.

This comes after a raft of new lab buildings have been submitted to and approved by Oxford City Council.

Plans have been submitted for new labs in Botley Road with schemes recently approved for Hythe Bridge Street and Sandford Gate.

In the scheme's planning statement, it said: “The site is currently part occupied by the New Richards Temporary Buildings which have a temporary permission until April 30 2027.

“Apart from two disabled spaces, car parking is not proposed on the site. Rather these are provided within the delivered multi-storey car park.

"The proposal does also include the re-orientation and reprovision of the car park approved to serve the Nursery in the adjacent Triangle Building. This will not provide car parking for the proposed development.

“The plans accompanying the application set out the external and internal arrangements for the building and landscaping as well as cross sections through it.”

It added: “The application proposes the erection of a three storey building with a basement and plant above. The proposed development sits within the parameters of the outline application.

"The outline application allowed a building of 14.5 metres to parapet and 19.5 metres to plant level. The masterplan also detailed the plot as delivering three storeys plus plant plus basement.

“Given the form of development proposed, a laboratory building there are functional requirements for the operation of such buildings which provide a rectangular layout of the building.

"The design of the building however, has utilised differing elevational finishes over the north and south elevations in particular to ensure that the mass of the building is broken down in the key views from Old Road and within the campus itself.

“The proposal also accords with all relevant national and local planning policies referring to design, layout, landscape, sustainability and accessibility.

“The application clearly demonstrates that the quantum of development is in accordance with the previously approved details, and consistent with national and local planning policies, as well as other material considerations.”

The campus had planning permission granted for 48,000sqm of research floorspace over five building plots with a car park with space for 459 cars in 2013.

The new scheme is an extension to that and will be decided by Oxford City Council's planning committee in due course.
