A multi-coloured recycled plastic bench has been won by a Didcot primary school.

Willowcroft School won the bench as the top prize in South Oxfordshire District Council's Litter Bug Detectives Trail, a competition aimed at promoting waste reduction and outdoor activities.

The school is now deciding where the bench’s permanent home will be as part of plans to redesign its playground.

Councillor Sam James-Lawrie, South Oxfordshire District Council's cabinet member for environment, said: "These trails are a fun way to engage with young people and their parents about how to reduce waste and litter, while also presenting a welcome outdoor children’s activity that’s free."

The school was entered into a draw for the prize alongside 19 others after one of its pupils, Elliott, completed the trail.

As the top prize winner, Elliott also won vouchers for himself.

The Litter Bug Detectives Trail was organised by the council's waste team, who created activity trails for children to follow during the school summer holidays.

The trails aimed to spread awareness about waste reduction and the environmental damage caused by litter while encouraging children to enjoy the outdoors.

They were located at sites in Abingdon, Didcot, North Hinksey, Thame, Wallingford, and Wantage.

The competition ran from Friday, July 19, to Sunday, August 11, and invited primary school aged children to complete the one to two km trails, answering questions along the way.
