A driver is in hospital with a serious injury and will require surgery following a five-vehicle crash on the A34.

Thames Valley Police released a statement this afternoon appealing for witnesses following the crash, which happened on the A34 southbound near Weston-on-the-Green just after 3.15pm yesterday (October 26).

Police say the crash involved a black Ford S-Max, a blue Ford Fiesta, a black Nissan Juke, a red Kia Sportage and a black Vauxhall Zafira.

The driver of the Fiesta, a 55-year-old woman, sustained a broken leg, which will require surgery.

She remains in hospital at this time.

Police have confirmed other drivers did not sustain any serious injuries and no arrests have been made.

The A34 southbound was closed both ways for several hours, which caused heavy delays.

Thames Valley Police, South Central Ambulance Service as well as Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue Service were all on scene.

The road reopened overnight as National Highways officers remained on scene for hours to deal with the aftermath of the crash which included a fuel spillage.

Speaking on Sunday, investigating officer PC Ruan Brink, of the Roads Policing Unit, said: “This was a serious collision involving five cars, and I would like to appeal to anybody who witnessed it to please get in touch with Thames Valley Police.

“I’d particularly like to hear from anyone who may have dash-cam footage of the collision, or the moments leading up to it, to make contact.

A diversion was in place for motorists as the road was closed in both directions throughout Saturday afternoon and overnight. 

Drivers were instructed to follow diversion signs as they left the A-road at junction 8A before joining the A418 to continue onto the A40.

The diversion took them towards Oxford to the Heyford Hill roundabout before continuing over Kennington roundabout to the A34 Hinksey Hill Interchange to re-join the A34 southbound. 

Eyewitnesses said cars were being turned around by emergency services after the crash took place. 

A statement issued by National Highways at the time said: "If this closure impacts on your planned route, please allow extra journey time. Plan ahead, you may wish to re-route or even delay your journey."

Many people left comments sending well-wishes to those involved. 

Among those was Kent Baldwin who said "seriously hope all involved are Ok. Roads are becoming worse and worse". 

South Central Ambulance Service as well as Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue Service have been contacted for comment by the Oxford Mail.
