Oxford University has disqualified Imran Khan from the contest to become the new chancellor.

The former Pakistani prime minister was reportedly running for the role from his prison cell in Pakistan.

Khan, a controversial politician and cricket star, attempted to enter the contest despite serving a 10-year jail sentence.

The seat of chancellor of Oxford University is vacant following the resignation of 80-year-old Lord Patten, the former governor of Hong Kong and Tory Party chairman, who held the post for 21 years.

Oxford University announced the official list of 38 candidates on Wednesday morning but Khan’s name was a notable omission.

The imprisoned former PM was charged by Pakistani police earlier this month with attempted murder.

This was over the death of a policeman during violent protests by his supporters, officials said on Tuesday, October 8.

Khan, who has been behind bars since 2023, is accused of inciting people to violence, they said.
