An Oxfordshire town council is one of the first in the country to have its own bio-diversity action plan.

Wallingford Town Council's landmark plan aims to protect and enhance local wildlife and natural spaces.

The plan is the brainchild of town councillor Mike Acreman and the full plan will be published soon.

The key highlights of the plan include habitat restoration, wildlife protection, community engagement, education and awareness.

In a Facebook post, town councillor Steve Holder said: “Wallingford Town Council is one of the first councils to adopt a biodiversity action plan.

"This important initiative aims to protect and enhance our local wildlife and natural spaces, ensuring a greener, healthier future for our community.

“We will focus on restoring and protecting vital habitats in and around Wallingford, promoting biodiversity.

“The plan outlines measures to safeguard local species, ensuring they thrive in our environment.

“The plan will include educational programs to raise awareness about local wildlife and the importance of biodiversity.”

He added: “This plan not only enhances our natural surroundings but also contributes to improved air quality, flood management, and overall community well-being. By fostering a rich biodiversity, we can enjoy a healthier, more vibrant environment for ourselves and future generations.

“The plan will be officially launched soon, so stay tuned for more details about how it will benefit Wallingford and the steps we’ll be taking to preserve our environment.”

A post from community group Wild About Wallingford said: “What wonderful news! Wallingford Town Council has worked hard on producing a Biodiversity Action Plan.

"We were really pleased to input our thoughts into the Plan a few months ago and look forward to the official launch.”

Wallingford landscape company GreenArt added: “This is great news and very exciting for our community.”

On the Wallingford Town Council website, it said: “Wallingford Town Council is passionate about improving our environment to make the town a wonderful place to live and work.

"Enhancing green spaces and wildlife is central to this aim. So we have drafted a biodiversity action plan that details opportunities around the town to restore and improve nature to support recreation, sport, relaxation, socialising, education and general well-being.

“The plan will soon be available on our website for everyone to see.”
