Girl Guides, Rangers and Brownies often featured on the Oxford Mail news pages with their numerous and varied activities.

We see in Picture 1 one of the events which took place at a social evening organised by the parents’ committee of the Thame group.

Walking on stilts around tin can obstacles proved to be one of the most popular attractions.

The gathering was held at Guide headquarters in the town in aid of Guide funds in 1969 and included numerous stalls and displays.

Picture 2 was taken at Holton parish church when the Wheatley Rangers’ flag was dedicated by the rector, the Rev Russell Hawken, in 1971.

(Image: Oxford Mail) The church was decorated with blue, gold and white flowers - the Ranger colours. The flag had been made over 18 months by leader Jean Harrison and Rangers.

In Picture 3, we see some of the 300 dolls collected by Brownies at Drayton, near Abingdon.

The local Girl Guides Association had launched a £2,000 appeal for a mobile eye clinic in its jubilee year. Some of the dolls on view were more than 65 years old.

Guide leader Mavis James said: “The girls have enjoyed collecting the dolls. They all brought their own dolls, all washed for the occasion.”

The Guides with her were, back row, left to right, Jean Constable, Susan Kitt, Hilary Brown, Barbara Ward, Susan Holden, Rachel Parker, and front, Sarah Bembrey, Susan Wastie, Sandra Macrae and Jane Jordan.

In 1970, groups were asked to do something cheerful to mark Guiding’s golden jubilee.

Carterton’s contribution in Picture 5 was to plant rose trees and bulbs in St John’s churchyard.

Picture 6 shows Brownies at Yarnton in 1970 testing toys they and their friends had made before sending them to children in Zambia - left to right, Susan Miskin, eight, Ellen Humphris, nine, Jacquelin Amor, 10, and Branwen Parry-Jones, eight.
