A by-election will select a new councillor for Witney Town Council.

Labour councillor Dr Lisa Cherry, who chaired the Stronger Communities committee, has stepped down from Witney Central ward for health reasons.

Leader of the council Ruth Smith said it had been "an honour" to work alongside her since the 2023 elections.

She said: "She has taught us a great deal about her areas of professional expertise - trauma-informed practice and the challenges and needs of care-experienced young people - and her leadership as chair of the stronger communities committee has ushered in new youth work and mental health initiatives for Witney as well as many community events.

"Lisa's influence on our current council can't be undone. We are all changed by her incisive logic and inclusive thinking."

Labour has eight seats on the town council, the Conservatives have seven, the Greens one and Labour and Co-operative one.

The deadline for return of nomination papers is 4pm on Friday, October 18.

If the election is contested the poll will take place on Thursday, November 14.
