Banbury United's club shop has been renamed in memory of a former volunteer and shop manager.

The shop at the Banbury Plant Hire Community Stadium is now called the John Ward Club Shop, in memory of Mr Ward, who died aged 51 on September 6.

Club secretary Claire Dumbreck, said: "It is a privilege for everyone at Banbury United FC to be in a position to do something positive for John, his friends, and family, on such a sad day.

"The memories of a grinning John standing on the step of the club shop and joking with people as they walked past will never leave us.

"The John Ward Club Shop is one of the ways in which we are commemorating John’s contribution to the club."

The announcement was made on the day of Mr Ward's funeral, which took place at 1pm on Friday, October 4, at Banbury Crematorium.

Before the service, funeral directors and club sponsor, Edd Frost & Daughters, brought Mr Ward to the club at around 12.20pm.

Mr Ward's family asked everyone who wanted to pay their respects to Mr Ward on the day wear Tottenham Hotspur, Banbury United, or any football shirts.

The John Ward Club Shop was open from 10am to midday for the purchase of kit and for the signing of a book of condolence for Mr Ward.
