Organisers of Oxford's annual fireworks display have said visitor numbers won't be impacted this year despite the bonfire not being included.

The event, organised by Oxford Round Table, left parts of South Park churned up last year after some 20,000 people attended.

Oxford City Council has issued a permit for the event on Saturday, November 2 after consulting with the Oxford Preservation Trust and the Friends of South Park group.

Bonfire (Image: Contributed) Joseph Garbett, co-event director, said: "Whilst we're disappointed to have had to remove the bonfire this year, it was more important for us to protect the event as a whole to make sure it's still here for years to come.

"We have however increased the spend on the actual fireworks so that the display is bigger and better than ever before.

“The temporary roadway will accommodate a significantly lower number of vehicle moments than required in previous years.

"No, we don't think it will impact visitor numbers. We've consistently seen a strong turnout each year as our event is a staple of the Oxford event calendar.

"Ticket sales are off to a great start, and we've received numerous positive messages and emails since announcing the display date.

"Many of these messages recognise the effort we have had to go to to protect the park physically, but also in protecting the very existence of the event.

"As volunteers, our priority is to raise as much money for charity as possible and we look forward to welcoming Oxford to the park for this huge community event on November 2."
