Oxford's popular annual fireworks display will be held without the bonfire this year, the city council has said.

The event, organised by Oxford Round Table, left parts of South Park churned up last year after some 20,000 people attended.

Oxford City Council has issued a permit for the event on Saturday, November 2 after consulting with the Oxford Preservation Trust and the Friends of South Park group.

This year additional safety measures will be in place to protect the ground at South Park, including the use of the temporary roadway both under the funfair and for vehicle access.

There will be strict controls on vehicle access to ensure only essential event and emergency vehicles are permitted to enter. This year's event will also not include a bonfire, further reducing the potential for ground damage.

Organisers have said the food village and bars will be selling a wide variety from local producers. Also Hebborn’s will be providing funfair rides for all the family to enjoy. The Super Family Tent, the tented enclosure, with inclusive food and drink as well as great view of the fireworks, will also be operating.

Proceeds from the event will be going to local charities and community groups across the county. The event has raised more than £1m for charity since it started, with organisers encouraging charities to email Oxford@roundtable.org.uk to request funding.

Joseph Garbett, event director, said: "The event has had to change a little this year, so whilst you might miss the bonfire, the fireworks themselves will be the biggest and best ever to make up for it."

They have partnered with Oxford Bus Company to offer a combined park and ride fireworks ticket. Extra buses will be running every 10 minutes between Thornhill and St Clements, making the event easier to get to.

Joseph added: “As there is no parking on or around the park, the park and ride is by far the best way to travel to South Park, with stops close to the main entrance gates. Gates for the event open at 4.30pm and we would recommend that people arrive early to enjoy the entertainment and activities on offer.”

Josh Worsfold, Oxford Round Table chairman, said: “What a display 2023 was! This year will be even better as we welcome back Oxfordshire's very own, National Fireworks Champions, Illusion Fireworks! Bring the family and join us for Oxford’s biggest charity fundraiser of the year!”
