A level crossing in an Oxfordshire town has reopened after being shut for two days.

London Road level crossing in Bicester was closed for nearly 48 hours due to a fault and residents reported there being disruptions.

It closed on Tuesday, October 1 at 9.43am and reopened today (October 3) at 9.45am, Network Rail has confirmed.

Yesterday (October 2), a spokesperson for Network Rail said: “Owing to a fault, the London Road level crossing in Bicester is currently closed.

"Unfortunately, a replacement barrier has not resolved the problem and our team is on site carrying out further tests.

"To keep everyone safe, the road remains closed until further notice."

Network Rail apologised to the local community for any inconvenience.

There have been fears in the community that the crossing will be closed permanently in the future due to a project by East Railway to connect Oxford to Cambridge.

The project would result in the London Road crossing being closed to vehicles, bikes and pedestrians for more than 45 minutes every hour and could, as a result, be closed permanently by Network Rail.

In July, Bicester and Woodstock's MP Calum Miller said the closure of this crossing would "cut the town in two" and would be a "significant loss of connectivity for the town".

He wrote to the rail minister, Lord Peter Hendy, asking for a meeting to discuss the importance of the crossing.
