A council-run recycling centre is currently unable to take plasterboard.

Dix Pit Household Waste Recycling Centre (HWRC) at Stanton Harcourt, near Witney, will not be accepting the waste from October 1 until further notice.

Plasterboard is made from an inner layer of gypsum sandwiched between two outer layers of lining paper.

When gypsum is disposed of alongside biodegradable wastes it can lead to the production of odorous and toxic hydrogen sulphide gas.

For this reason there are legal requirements around how it is disposed of.

Plasterboard continues to be accepted at Redbridge HWRC (Old Abingdon Road, Oxford, OX1 1XG) and Ardley Fields HWRC (Brackley Road, Bicester, OX27 7PH).

Oxfordshire County Council apologised for any inconvenience caused.
