Householders in Oxfordshire can win £225 to go towards their monthly fuel bills by downloading an energy-saving app.

Oxfordshire County Council announced the competition in response to the energy price cap increase from Tuesday (October 1).

Starting this month, three bill payers will be selected every month to win, with a total of 12 winners, until January.

To enter the prize draws, residents need to download the app, connect it to their smart meter, and log in monthly to check tips and savings.

The app, launched in July, has been downloaded more than 1,800 times.

It is designed to help households save energy and cut down on bills.

Users of the app are expected to save more than £200 annually on energy bills, even if they don't win the competition.

Councillor Dr Pete Sudbury, deputy leader of the council, said: "We expect everyone who signs up will be able to cut their gas and electricity consumption by at least seven per cent and save themselves money."

The app collects data from smart meters to provide personalised tips to help users reduce their energy consumption.

Tom Woolley, SMS and Metis’s product and strategy director, said: "Helping people save money by reducing their energy consumption is good for the planet and your pocket."

The app is independent of energy suppliers and is supported by the council in collaboration with SMS and Metis.

It is funded by the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero.
