An exhibition of over 30 wedding dresses dating back from wartime to the present day raised thousands to help turn an ancient church into a community space.

The funds raised by the event at St Denys Church in Northmoor far exceeded expectations, said organisers.

Denise Blackwell said: "All the items in the exhibition were more than just dresses or outfits, they are memories in fabric.

"As one bride put it, her dress ‘holds much more than just the wedding’.

"Retrieving wedding dresses from the attic or back of the wardrobe can bring back images of wives, mothers and grandmothers, reminding us that they were once brides-to-be."

Organisers hoped the event will help realise their vision of bringing the beautiful building into the 21st Century and making it a community space to be enjoyed for worship, life and community events, or just to sit and enjoy the peace.

More similar events are planned and it is hoped to soon install a small kitchen facility and accessible toilet.

Ms Blackwell said: "Total net funds raised from the exhibition were £3,387. This far exceeded our expectations and is a step towards upgrading our beautiful church, and highlighting our pledge to make this wonderful space a workable venue."
