Abingdon Tesco Extra store has reopened but half of its car park remains flooded.

The store off Marcham Road closed at about 6pm on Tuesday after the River Ock broke its banks following heavy rainfall on Sunday and Monday.

The car park was completely flooded.

The store remained closed on Wednesday and Thursday and reopened today.

Staff reopened the store early this morning but half the car park can't be used due to flood water - only half the spaces are accessible via the petrol station road onto the site.

The petrol station has also reopened.

The Tesco Extra store was also forced to close in January for a short time after the car park flooded. It also closed briefly the previous April due to floods.

There is currently no Environment Agency flood plan for Abingdon, and the agency said earlier this year that flood barriers once tested to protect homes in Chaunterell Way and surrounding streets from the River Ock had been withdrawn.

The agency claimed the barriers, thought to have cost millions of pounds, were never designated solely for Abingdon's use.

Tesco has not said whether it is in discussions with the Environment Agency or local councils regarding the repeated flooding.

More than a month's worth of rain fell on Oxfordshire in 24 hours on Sunday and Monday and the rain is continuing, although drier weather is forecast over the weekend.
