A man captured a dramatic picture of a tornado as warnings are issued for extreme weather across the UK.

The image shows the grey vapour of the tornado swirling into the sky.

The man spotted the remarkable sight near the A34 in Abingdon this afternoon (Thursday, September 26).

The photographer, who preferred to remain anonymous, said: "Straight away 'I said is that a tornado'."

It comes as a tornado advisory has been issued affecting the UK as the nation braces for 10 hours of severe weather, including heavy downpours, flash floods and thunderstorms.

A large part of southeast England and East Anglia is covered by the 10-hour severe weather warning issued by the Tornado and Storm Research Organisation (Torro).

They warned of the risk of "brief" tornado storms developing, and said: "Showers and isolated thunderstorms are already present around parts of SW and S England, and these will tend to move NE through this morning, with other showers and a few thunderstorms developing inland via diurnal heating."

The extreme weather comes amid an amber warning for rain storms from the Met Office for northern and western areas of Oxfordshire from 6pm today until 6am tomorrow.
