A weather warning for Oxfordshire has been upgraded from yellow to amber by the Met Office.

Yesterday the Met Office issued a yellow warning for heavy rain later and tomorrow.

This morning the national forcecaster brought it forward to start from 6am today.

The Met Office has now upgraded the warning to amber for northern and western areas of Oxfordshire.

It means heavy rain is likely to cause flooding and transport disruption this evening and overnight.

The warning is in force from 6pm today (September 26) until 6am tomorrow (September 27).

The Met Office said slow moving showers and thunderstorms will develop through the afternoon, merging into a large band of heavy rain through the evening

Some places, especially across central and eastern parts of the warning area, are likely to receive 30-40mm in three hours or less, and perhaps 50-60mm or more in around six hours.

This rain will fall onto already saturated ground and affect communities recovering from recent flooding.

Travel disruption and further flooding is likely, with rivers continuing to rise after the rain clears.

The rain is forecast to clear slowly south overnight.
