Abingdon Tesco Extra store remains closed today as its car park is still flooded.

The store off Marcham Road, one of the biggest in the country, was shut yesterday after its car park was flooded.

The River Ock burst its banks following heavy rainfall on Sunday and Monday, and the car park filled with water on Tuesday, forcing staff to shut on Tuesday evening.

Staff at the site this morning could be seen sweeping water away from the entrance.

"The water is going down a little bit but not very fast.

"Shoppers are still driving down here and having to turn round because the entrance roads are blocked off. The petrol station is still closed as well."

The Tesco Extra store was also forced to close in January for a short time after the car park flooded. It also closed briefly the previous April due to floods.

The agency claimed the barriers, thought to have cost millions of pounds, were never designated solely for Abingdon's use.

Tesco has not said whether it is in discussions with the Environment Agency or local councils regarding the repeated flooding.

More than a month's worth of rain fell on Oxfordshire in 24 hours on Sunday and Monday.
