More homes could  be flooded in Abingdon following heavy rain, residents have been warned.

People living in the Chaunterell Way area off Drayton Road have been affected yet again after the River Ock burst its banks.

Some residents homes have been flooded, while others have suffered water flooding their garages.

The latest flooding follows a similar incident in January when Environment Agency bosses confirmed they had removed temporary flood barriers once tested to combat rising water levels on the Ock.

The agency said there was currently no existing flood plan for the town and Oxford West and Abingdon MP called for action.

(Image: Colin Pizzie) Jon House, of Chaunterell Way, told BBC Oxford water was coming up through floorboards in his living room, so he is taking his six-month-old baby son elsewhere.

He said: "If it's going to flood the house, I don't want him in here - it's not safe for him to be in it. So the wife was much happier with the idea of having him out and taking him to family somewhere else.

"We've packed all the clothes for him and us, everything in the downstairs of the house we've moved to upstairs, so we've done what we can.

"When the water's down, we'll come back, see what the damage is and take it from there."

Fellow resident Jo Simmons added: "It just makes you so anxious, it's just horrendous.

(Image: Colin Pizzie) "In 2007 I lived here when it was flooded, the whole house - all the way through.

"Then nothing happened for years and years, never used to come out on the road.

"And now it comes out on the road twice in a year - and badly. What do you do then? We're never going to sell the house are we? Who the hell's going to buy the house? So we're just stuck with no help."

Abingdon Tesco Extra shut off Marcham Road shut on Tuesday after its car park flooded and it remained closed on Wednesday (September 25). It is not yet known when the store, and the petrol station, will reopen.

The Ock burst its banks following heavy rain on Sunday and Monday - when Oxfordshire suffered the heaviest rainfall in a 24-hour period since 1968.

The worst is not yet over according to the Environment Agency.

Tonight shortly before 6.30pm it issued the following flood warning for the River Ock at Abingdon and Caldecott: "Property flooding is expected. River levels are falling on the River Ock but will remain responsive to rainfall over the coming days.

"Therefore, flooding of properties closest to the river is expected to continue today, 25/09/24, in the Abingdon area.

(Image: Colin Pizzie) "Areas most at risk are Nash Drive, Chaunterell Way, Mill Paddock, Orpwood Way and St Helens Mill. Further rainfall is forecast overnight and Thursday evening / night with the potential to be heavy at times. This message will be updated on Thursday morning, 26/09/2024, or as the situation changes."

The flood warning area is: River Ock at Abingdon, from New Cut Mill down to the confluence with the Thames, including the Ely Close, Shepherd Gardens, Medlicott Drive, Tower Close, Ock Street, Francis Little Drive, Hermitage Road and St Amand Drive as well as parts of Caldecott.

Colin Pizzie has taken photos of flooded parts of the town and shared them with the Oxford Mail.
