A major cycling event in Oxford celebrating World Car-Free Day has been cancelled. 

Kidical Mass Oxford, which was due to take place today (September 22) at 2pm, has been cancelled due to the weather warning in place all day today. 

The Met Office has warned that "areas of heavy rain will bring the potential for disruption" and that "spray and flooding could lead to difficult driving conditions and some temporary road closures".

Organiser Owen McKnight made the announcement today.

He said: "We have taken the decision to cancel today's ride in Oxford after the Met Office weather warning of rain, applying to all road users.

"It's a shame, of course, but an action for Safe Streets Now has to be safe."

Kidical Mass Oxford was launched in June 2022, with 100 riders gathering in Radcliffe Square from the east and north of the city.

This would have been the sixth event of its kind, and organisers hoped it would be the biggest yet.

The event aims to encourage motorists to leave their cars at home for the day, providing an opportunity for children to cycle safely into town, with the support of experienced volunteer marshals who help manage traffic at crossings and busier intersections.

Kidical Mass is an international movement aimed at getting children and adults excited about cycling and improving their confidence on the roads by riding in a safe, friendly, and welcoming group.
