Oxford boaters were warned after a lock in the city was suddenly closed.

Iffley Lock was shut on Wednesday morning following a hydraulic leak which meant that emergency contractors had to be called.

Environment Agency operations manager Maria Herlihy warned boaters of the issue on Wednesday morning.

“Boaters update: Iffley lock is currently closed to navigation due to a hydraulic leak and contractors have been called,” she said in a public warning.

“Apologies for any inconvenience caused, we will keep you updated.”

Ms Herlihy then updated later that the lock had reopened in the afternoon: "Boaters update: Iffley lock now open for navigation apologises for any inconvenience caused."

This incident follows news that the Environment Agency is working with Witney Town Council to solve a major algae problem in the town.

The Witney Lake has turned green in colour, posing a risk to people and pets with the public warned not to come into contact with the water.
