Drivers are expected to face further delays on Botley Road in Oxford due to fresh resurfacing work in addition to a major project at the station and Thames Water works.

Oxfordshire County Council said the work will be carried out in two phases.

Botley Road has been closed at the rail bridge since last April, which has at times meant the route has been less congested than it used to be.

But last week and this week drivers have faced queues on the road due to Thames Water work close to Osney Bridge.

And drivers will also have to cope with the triple whammy of resurfacing work on their way into west Oxford, starting on Friday.

(Image: Oxford Mail) A spokesman for Oxfordshire County Council said: "Carriageway resurfacing work is being carried out in two phases.

"The work will take place September 13-14, outside Waitrose. This is taking place at night (8pm-6am) to minimise disruption to shoppers.

"The rest of the work (16-25 September) will take place during the daytime (7am-7pm).

"Temporary traffic lights will be in place. They will be manually controlled and traffic flows monitored."

It is understood that highways bosses have chosen to schedule the resurfacing work while the rail bridge is shut, as less traffic is using the Botley Road at the moment, compared to when the route is fully open.

Network Rail is working on a £161m improvement scheme for Oxford rail station which has resulted in the closure of Botley Road at the rail bridge.

Rail bosses had hoped to reopen Botley Road in October, but in July they announced that the project has overrun and so the road will not be able to reopen in October.

Now a review is taking place and a new timetable for the scheme is expected to be announced later this month.

Rail minister Lord Hendy said earlier he was aware of the issue after city council leader Susan Brown and Oxford West and Abingdon MP Layla Moran said residents should be told when work would be completed.
