A new mental health facility will open at an Oxford hospital next month after nearly seven years of fundraising.

Family and friends of Lucy Sessions, from Bicester, have spent nearly seven years fundraising to open the facility in memory of Ms Sessions, who died by suicide in 2017.

Ms Sessions was 22 when she took her own life while a patient at Warneford Hospital, a psychiatric hospital in Headington.

Teaming up with Oxford Health Charity, her parents, Lesley and Neil Gordon, have raised over £70,000 for a new unit at the hospital.

The unit, called Lucy's Room, will enable those receiving care on the adult wards and through the community mental health teams to have a space where they can make music, play music and receive music therapy sessions.

The grand opening date will be on Saturday, October 5.

Mrs Gordon said they are "excited" about the facility opening.

"It's taken a long time, we're really grateful to get there. People have put a lot of money into it," she said.

"It's exciting in a way, and we're looking forward to getting it open so we can have closure for what we've been through.

"But in a way it's sad, because we're coming to the end of something."

There have also been Tesco collections held in Banbury, Bicester and Oxford.

Mrs Gordon said: "When we do collections we get people coming up that were actually in hospital with Lucy that we don't know, and they tell stories about Lucy. It's really nice to hear from people that we don't know about how much she helped them.

"She was really helpful in hospital, she used to sing to them and play guitar and try and cheer everybody up.

"So to hear those stories from people that we don't know is really nice and quite heart-warming.

"We've made some really nice friends as well, some of Lucy's friends have stayed in touch. It's been a hard experience, but a lot has came out of it, and we know the fundraising has already helped in raising awareness."

She added: "We've had a lot of people approach us about the room, a lot of groups from outside of the hospital, so it's going to be well used which is nice to hear.

"There's been some really incredibly generous people."

"There’s been so many groups involved, it’s been a multi-departmental effort to get the room done," Mrs Gordon said.

"If we've saved one life, then everything is worth it."

Mr Gordon said Lucy was at her happiest when she was playing music and singing.

"We're hoping this will help somebody else," he said.

Mrs Gordon added: "It's a shame there was nothing like this around for her, because she would've loved it.

"She always had a guitar in her hand and was entertaining somebody.

"I'm sure she's looking down with a big smile on her face. She’d be over the moon."
