A NUMBER of major roads in Oxford city centre will be closed next week as the annual St Giles Funfair returns for its 400th year. 

The road closures will come into force at 12.01am on September 8 and will be in place until 8am on September 11.

The traffic measures will be in place to manage vehicles and the safety of pedestrians for the fun fair, which will take place on Monday, September 9 and Tuesday, September 10.

Oxfordshire County Council has warned delays in the area are likely and that motorists should find alternative routes.

Prohibition of vehicles will be in place for the following roads.

Banbury Road A4165 will be closed from its junction with Parks Road to its junction with Keble Road.

Keble Road will also be closed.

Beaumont Street will also be closed from St John Street to St Giles, and Bevington Road will be closed at its junction with Woodstock Road.

The order says that St Giles will also be closed, with the pay and display parking and taxi rank suspended.

Magdalen Street east and west will be closed, and Pusey Street will be closed from its junction with St Giles to its junction with St John Street.

The A4144 Woodstock Road will also be closed from St Giles to Observatory Street, as well as Little Clarendon Street for its entire length.

On Parks Road, traffic emerging onto Banbury Road will only be able to turn right away from the city.

The alternative city through-route for traffic will be via Worcester Street, Walton Street, Kingston Road, St Margaret's Road and vice versa.
