Work to create a new splash park in Oxford will begin later this month.

The installation of a new splash play area and of a balance bike and scooter track for younger children will begin in Hinksey Park in mid-September.

Oxford City Council secured a £100,000 grant from the FCC Communities Foundation to replace the existing splash park earlier this year.

The city council will invest the rest of the funds, with the project expected to cost £330,000.

Councillor Chewe Munkonge, cabinet member for a healthy Oxford, said: "In these challenging financial times, we are fortunate to be able to continue investing in our local community and facilities.

"This funding allows us to maintain the seasonal wet play opportunities at Hinksey Park, which has been a beloved tradition for families since the 1960s.

"Many fondly remember using the old paddling pool and are excited about its replacement splash park."

Cheryl Raynor, grant manager, FCC Communities Foundation, added: "We are delighted that work is due to start shortly on site.

"This is an ambitious and exciting project and the first spade in the ground is a significant milestone."

The new facilities are expected to open in Spring 2025 and will be free for users.

There will be no public access to the splash area while the work takes place, but the rest of the park will remain open.
