A group of 25 medical students from Gaza will arrive in Oxford next week for a summer school.

On September 9, the students, being flown from Gaza and the West Bank, will begin a two week medical training programme.

They will visit wards, operating theatres and high-grade medical simulation suites.

The programme is run by OxPal, a non-political, student-led initiative launched six years ago with the goal of increasing patient access to trained medical professionals, wherever they are.

The summer school, including a clinical schedule run by volunteers from Oxford University Hospitals NHS Trust and several Oxford colleges, will allow the students, many of whom have never left their home towns, to experience life in England.

They will be accommodated in Oxford colleges to gain a full university experience.

In 2023, OxPal held its first summer school. Twenty medical students from the West Bank, about to start their first clinical year, were selected through an application process.

They attended clinical placements at the John Radcliffe Hospital or at GP practices.

During their stay, the students attended seminars on communication skills and medical ethics, received shadowing opportunities on the wards and in theatres, and attended a surgical skills course at Green Templeton College.

They also received clinical skills teaching at the Oxford University skills lab and simulation training at the OxSTAR high-fidelity simulation suite.
