Healthcare workers representing 27 countries took part in the county's first Diversity Volleyball Tournament.

Oxford Brookes University hosted the event which saw six teams from across the county showcase their volleyball skills.

The opening ceremony on August 17 was attended by guests including the lord lieutenant of Oxfordshire, Marjorie Neasham Glasgow.

As the King’s representative in Oxfordshire, she champions charities and their volunteers and takes an interest in the business, urban, rural, and social life of the county.

She said: "We are grateful for our healthcare workers here in Oxfordshire and grateful for the remarkable contribution they make to our well-being.

"It was such a pleasure to see them enjoy this special sporting weekend which was organised just for them."

Also in attendance was the lord mayor of Oxford, councillor Mike Rowley, and Oxford University Hospitals' chief nursing officer, Yvonne Christley.

The guests paraded from the piazza in front of the John Heny Brookes Building of Oxford Brookes University on Headington Road to the Centre for Sports.

The tournament, which took place over the course of the weekend, was organised by deputy lieutenant Jose Ariel Lañada, chair of the Filipino Community of Oxfordshire and president of the Filipino Nurses Association UK.

He said: "We made history. There is power in our diversity and there is strength in our unity."
