Following thousands of nominations, the finalists of this year's OUH Staff Recognition Awards have been announced.

More than 2,800 teams, members of staff, volunteers and fundraisers were nominated for the awards which celebrate the achievements of Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (OUH) staff.

The winners will be announced at an event on Thursday, September 5, and on social media on the same evening.

Among the finalists is Dawn Cowley, a clinical support worker at the Horton General Hospital's Emergency Department who has been nominated for the Award for Excellence.

Her nomination read: "There is always an individual in a team who quietly in the background supports in multiple ways above and beyond their job role and that is Dawn.

"Her calm, pragmatic approach in one of the most stressful environments in healthcare has supported many staff, and she truly values each member of the team."

She added: "Receiving this nomination is so very special. I love what I do, and I appreciate the recognition."

Also in the running for an award is Rachel Collins, head of security at OUH.

Her 28-year career at the trust has seen her tackle difficult or sensitive situations on a daily basis.

She has been nominated for the Award for Delivery, with her nomination commending her "dignity, calmness, fairness and consistency" when discussing "painful and tragic events with patients and staff".

She said: "It means a lot to have been nominated. I aspire to do the best I can to make a difference by both improving security in the trust and supporting staff who have been affected by incidents.

"This recognition acknowledges that effort, so I am very grateful."

After playing a key role in developing a partnership between the trust and the Open University to deliver an undergraduate nursing degree programme, OUH educators Irene Cores-Alcaniz and Daniel Hodgkins are up for the Award for Learning.

Their nomination said they were "instrumental" in the project, "truly representing a passion for learning and developing our future nursing workforce".

It continued: "The enthusiasm they have both shown has encouraged our OUH educators to work together in developing teaching materials and supporting our new group of learners.”

Ms Cores-Alcaniz added: “I am honoured and thrilled to be nominated with Dan. I am passionate about learning, and I always wanted to help others with my experience.

"Being able to help students to become registered nurses is inspiring, and my dream work come true.

“It has been so rewarding to see our Blended Degree students thriving and receiving excellent feedback from patients.”
