A Banbury woman has become one of the first people in the UK to win £1,000 through a Poundland promotion.

Kerry Harris, 36, won the cash prize courtesy of Poundland's 'Grand in Your Hand' promotion.

The company launched the programme at the beginning of August, offering 30 customers across the UK the chance to win £1,000 each day for 30 days.

When customers pay at any of the discounter's 3,000 manned checkouts in its more than 750 UK stores, they become eligible for an instant cash prize draw.

The 30 winners set to receive the cash prize have been chosen at random.

One of them is Ms Harris, who won her prize at the Banbury Cross Retail Park store, while buying three wicker baskets.

Ms Harris, who is set to receive the money in the next few days, said: "I was on my way to see a friend and popped into Poundland for a look - to be honest, when I was told I’d won, I thought it was a scam.

"I’ll spend the money taking my mum on a shopping spree, my partner wants a new Celtic top too, but the rest will be saved for Christmas presents."

A regular customer at Poundland, she collected her prize from Orsi Olasz, Poundland's Banbury Cross manager.

Ms Olasz said: "It’s amazing that one of the first 30 winners is one of our regular shoppers. We couldn’t believe it either.

"It just goes to show that we really do offer amazing value here at Poundland."

There is no requirement for any additional purchase to take part in the 'Grand in Your Hand' promotion.

All Poundland customers need to do is check out as normal, allowing the computer systems in each store to randomly select a shopper to win £1,000 each day.

The campaign comes after Poundland confirmed earlier this month it had introduced new in-store displays at its stores to "underline its commitment to be the home of the pound".

The sop also offers more than 1,000 grocery items at £1 or less to its customers.

Since opening its first store in Burton-upon-Trent in 1990, Poundland, has built a network of more than 800 stores in the UK and the Republic of Ireland.

It now has around 18,000 staff who serve up to seven million customers every week.

Poundland offers thousands of products in store with more than 1,000 brands in 17 shopping categories including food and drink, health and beauty, household, gardening, DIY, pet, stationery, books, DVDs and toys.
