A property which overlooks an historical landmark is on the market for the first time in 47 years.

The Grove overlooks The Maharaja’s Well in Stoke Row near Henley.

The well was constructed in 1864 and was a gift from the Maharajah of Benares (now Varanasi) in India.

The Maharajah was inspired by his English friend Edward Anderdon Reade, who had been the Lieutenant Governor of the North-West Provinces in India.

Reade had initiated the digging of wells in India to provide clean water, a gesture that profoundly impacted the Maharajah.

In return, the Maharajah funded the construction of the well in Stoke Row, a village that had faced water scarcity challenges.

The well is four ft in diameter, dug by hand mostly through chalk, and is deeper than the height of two Nelson’s Columns.

It took a year to complete and was opened on Queen Victoria’s birthday in 1864.

The well was renovated in 1979-1983, with work carried out by builders M.C. Robins, whose family have owned The Grove since 1977 and still operate from its outbuildings and workshop.

The house currently offers nearly 2,000 sq ft of internal accommodation, with the potential to extend and develop subject to the usual consents.

The entrance hall leads down to the L-shaped sitting room, with sliding doors to the patio and garden.

From here there is a family room, also with sliding patio doors. The kitchen is to the other side of the house and overlooks the rear garden and provides access to the dining room.

Off the kitchen there is a pantry, separate utility room with a back door. Accessed from the utility room on the side off the house, there is a large conservatory with a vaulted ceiling.

Completing the ground floor is a cloakroom off the utility room and cellar (under the sitting room).

Stairs from the hallway lead to the first floor. There is a large principal bedroom with an en-suite bathroom. There are two further double bedrooms and a family bath and shower room. All bedrooms have built-in cupboards.

Outside, the house sits back from the road behind a well pruned hedge, offering security and privacy but not blocking the view of The Maharajah's Well.

The landscaped south-facing rear garden has an extensive patio off the back of the house, with a lawned area that wraps around the side of the house.
