Spirits were high across Cherwell today (August 22) as year 11 students collected their GCSE results.

Countless students in Bicester and Banbury celebrated their results today, with many off to college or sixth form next month. 

Despite the challenges of the Covid pandemic for the pupils in year seven and eight, many achieved top grades. 

Bicester

Students at The Cooper School have attained an impressive set of GCSE results, with 70 per cent achieving grade four or higher in maths, 76 per cent achieving grade four or higher in English and 70 per cent achieved at least two grade fours or higher in Science.

"We’ve been so impressed by this year group and the way that they have grown over their five years at The Cooper School.

"The atmosphere this morning as the students have collected their results has been lovely, with celebrations and support between students and staff, it has been wonderful to see so many smiles.

The Bicester School

Here, 68 per cent of pupils achieved a grade four plus in English language, 67 per cent achieved grade four plus in maths and 64 per cent achieved four plus in English and maths, with 39 per cent achieving five plus in English and maths.

Headteacher at The Bicester School, Tony Rushworth, said: “Congratulations to our Year 11 GCSE students in achieving a very good set of results.

"The students should be very proud of their achievements, especially given the turbulent nature of their early educational experience at secondary school when learning was disrupted by the covid pandemic in Years 7 and 8.

"We wish all of our students well in their next step and look forward to welcoming many of them into our 6th form and Activate Colleges”. 

Banbury

Wykham Park Academy

Students at Wykham Park Academy also celebrated their results this morning, with the school noting an improvement in results in comparison to last year.

A spokesperson for the school said: "We are so pleased with the achievement of our year 11 students this academic year; they have worked very hard and deserve to succeed.

"Thank you so much to the staff who always give their all to ensure our students' success.

"The improvement in achievement in comparison to last year, highlights the commitment of all in our community and we feel very proud as we see our students move on to their next steps."

North Oxfordshire Academy (NOA)

Year 11 students at North Oxfordshire Academy in Banbury also celebrated after receiving their GCSE results.

This year 63 per cent of students achieved a grade four or above in both English and maths, with almost half (49 per cent) achieving grade five or above in both subjects.

Blessed George Napier (BGN)

Here, 85 per cent of students gained at least a grade four and above in English, 82 per cent achieved at least a grade four and above in Maths, and half of all students gained grade five or above in both English and Maths.

Half of students achieved a grade seven or above, and over 20 per cent gained grade nine in at least one subject. 

Headteacher, Niamh Dolan, said: “It has been wonderful to share the happiness of students collecting their results today.

"Their success is well-deserved and they should be very proud of what they have achieved. Whether students are continuing their studies to A Level, taking on a new course at College or an Apprenticeship, I know that they will to be successful and I am confident they will achieve great things in the future”.

The Warriner

Nearly half of the 279 students at The Warriner near Banbury attained a grade five in both their English and maths GCSEs, with a third of students achieving grade seven plus in their triple Sciences.

Head of school, Mrs Sharon Nicholls said, “It has been a real privilege to share the excitement with our students as they collected their results today.

"The students have shown that despite the disruption they experienced to their early secondary education, their hard work and resilience has paid off, all our students can take great pride in their achievements.”

Chenderit School

Students at Chenderit School near Banbury achieved top grades in a wide range of subjects, with 82 per cent achieving a standard pass in English and 75 per cent achieving a standard pass in maths.

Overall, 68 per cent of students achieved a standard pass in English and maths combined, with 69 per cent of students achieving 5 or more standard passes.

Jane Cartwright, Headteacher, said: “The atmosphere in school this morning has been so positive as our students, who have done extremely well, collected their results."
