An Oxford sixth form will cover the VAT on A-Level retake programmes for the upcoming academic year.

Greene's College announced the initiative in response to the government's decision to impose VAT on private education, causing concern among parents and educators about the additional financial burden to families.

The new policy is expected to take effect later this academic year.

As a result, the college has decided to absorb the VAT fees for students retaking one or more A-Level subjects.

The aim is to ease the financial strain and ensure students' education remains uninterrupted by the new policy.

It also recognises the practical difficulty faced by many students of finding alternative A-Level retake options.

Executive chairman of Greene's, Christopher Upton, said: "Our priority has always been the success and wellbeing of our students.

"By covering the VAT on retake programmes, we hope to ensure that financial barriers do not impede the options for students' who need to retake their A-Levels.

"This measure reflects our commitment to providing accessible, high-quality education, especially during challenging times."

Greene's College said its approach has been "widely praised by parents and educational advocates".

In 2023, 78 per cent of grades received by its students were A* to B, significantly outperforming the national average.

The college also boasts a strong track record of guiding students to prestigious universities.
