The heartbroken family of a ‘much loved’ businessman who died three weeks after being attacked at a train station have thanked medics in Oxford for taking care of him.

John Donovan, 60, was attacked at Reading Train Station on Saturday, July 20, and rushed to the John Radcliffe Hospital where he was placed into an induced coma.

He died in hospital on August 11. A post-mortem examination found Mr Donovan’s cause of death was a traumatic head injury.

In a tribute released through Thames Valley Police, his family said: “We would like to take this opportunity to express our thanks to the police and ambulance staff who attended John immediately after the incident and escorted him to the John Radcliffe Hospital.

“We would also like to say a huge thank you for the excellent care that he received in the Neurosciences ICU in Oxford.

“The staff not only looked after John, they supported us as a family in the last three weeks of his life."

The much-loved Tilehurst man was a devoted brother, father, grandfather, uncle and brother in law, and had a huge circle of friends from his school days and varied interests.

Mr Donovan's family said they had been left "devastated" by his death.

They said that he ‘would always be there to help with a smile and offers of support.’

“We would now be very grateful as a family if we are given time to grieve for the lovely person who was John in private.”

A 26-year-old man from Reading arrested on July 21 on suspicion of inflicting grievous bodily harm has been re-arrested on suspicion of murder and manslaughter and remains in police custody.

A man, 39, from Slough, was also arrested on suspicion of causing GBH with intent, and a 20-year-old woman from Reading was arrested on suspicion of causing GBH on July 20.

They were bailed until October 13.
