The former mayor of Bracknell Forest has confirmed he will be running to be chancellor of the University of Oxford

An election for the role is taking place during the third week of Michaelmas term commencing October 26 and will be held online.

The election was announced following the current chancellor, Chris Patten, Lord Patten of Barnes, announcing earlier this year that he will retire.

Fluent in multiple languages, Mr Bhandari says he is "committed to further enhancing Oxford’s global reputation".

Mr Bhandari says he is "deeply committed to fostering cross-cultural collaboration".

Harry Stratton, a lawyer and union activist from East London, is also running to be chancellor.

He claims he is the only left-wing candidate running and says he is endorsed by John McDonnell, the former shadow chancellor.

Mr Stratton describes himself as a "union and student activist" who is "dedicated to fighting for fair working conditions and against fee increases".

He said: "I’ve helped support striking teaching staff; fought against pay deductions following strike action; and helped refound Unite’s Legal Workers Branch to fight against unpaid overtime and internships.

"I am running because, for the last century, the chancellor has been a failed right-wing politician – and William Hague and Peter Mandelson will be no different.

"My platform is increasing the minimum wage for all staff to £15/hr; abolishing 100 per cent final exams; and opposing any increases to tuition fees."

According to national reports, Lord Peter Mandelson and Lord William Hague have reportedly confirmed they are in the race for the ‘most venerable posts in British public life’.
