Photographs show that several vehicles were badly hit in the incident causing harm to the vehicles with some car windows cracked.

The police force confirmed four people had been injured in the crash and one person was seriously injured.

Later on Thursday evening, a Thames Valley Police spokesperson said: “This is a road traffic collision involving six vehicles, first reported at around 3.10pm.

“One person has serious injuries and three others have minor injuries, no fatalities though.

“The road is closed in both directions between the A4130 roundabout near Crowmarsh Gifford and Church Road, Benson.”

Officers cordoned off the road with cones, closing both sides of the road as traffic was ground to a halt.

Onlooker Zihan Zhou said: "I live not far from A4074 in Benson and heard loads of sirens passing by.

"There seems to be more cars parked there than those involved in the accident. The blue Audi seems fine. The white Renault van had some rear bumper damage.

"The hatch behind the Land Rover is pretty badly damaged and there was an old lady being treated by paramedics.

"In total, there seem to be quite a few passengers around.

"There is a very large trailer-type vehicle which seems like it might have detached from the vehicle towing it."

The location of the crash caused a large build-up of cars in the area with several emergency service vehicles in attendance.

A fire engine, several police cars as well as a couple of ambulances were all present at the scene as victims received medical treatment.

Bus routes were also diverted while the incident was dealt with.

A statement from Thames Travel said: “Our X40 and 139 buses remain on diversion due to this incident and are experiencing delays of up to 30 minutes as a result.”

Zihan Zhou added: "The location of the crash is just before the Benson Lane slip road from Crowmarsh.

"There is a pedestrian island in the middle of the road making the lanes narrower than usual and the speed limit changes from 60mph to 50mph around there as well.

"There seem to be more cars behind the ambulances but I didn't go behind those."
