Spirits were high today as students across the Cherwell District celebrated their A-level exam results.

Banbury and Bicester students collected their results this morning (Thursday, August 15), with many of the students starting university next month, starting degree apprenticeships or taking a gap year.

At The Cooper School in Bicester, 23 per cent of the grades achieved were A*-A, an improvement from last year.

At Wykham Park Academy in Banbury, 80 per cent of students got into their top choice university, with nearly half of the cohort achieving A*-B grades.

Students at Blessed George Napier (BGN) in Banbury achieved "one of the best sets of key stage five results", with over half of all grades achieved being A*-B.

North Oxfordshire Academy in Banbury saw 74 per cent of students gaining A*-C, and students at The Bicester School celebrated "another fantastic set of A-Level and vocational results", with the average A Level grade being C+ and a Merit for BTECs.

"We're so incredibly proud of them, they've worked really really hard and I think the great results are indicative of the fantastic teaching that they've had and the commitment the students and the families have made to their education.

"We are very confident that the students have achieved better than last year."

She added: "A big well done to all of our students and families and staff who have supported them along the way.

"We're really excited to see what happens next with their next steps and we will watch with pride as they move on to their destinations."

Headteacher of BGN Niamh Dolan told the Oxford Mail: "We’re absolutely delighted for all of the students in our sixth form.

"They’ve achieved fabulous results which puts them in a great place for their next steps.

"To see them achieve such great grades today is such a joy and it is testament to their hard work and the support that they’ve had from their teachers."

Alfred Antony, joint head boy at BGN with Darrheh Conway, achieved three A*s and is off to study Bio Chemistry at University College London.

Darrheh Conway achieved AAB and will be starting a degree apprenticeship in mechanical engineering, and Yuri has secured a place at the University of Surrey to study Physics. 

William Jones is off to the University of Nottingham to study Physiotherapy, and described the last two years as "very enjoyable".

At the Warriner, just outside of Banbury, 55 per cent of students achieved A*-B grades. 

At Chenderit, also just outside of Banbury, just under 70 per cent of students gained places at their first choice university.

Bicester 

With students at the Bicester School achieving "another fantastic set of A-Level and vocational results", headteacher Tony Rushworth said: “Congratulations to all our year 13 students for the excellent results achieved, despite the numerous covid disruptions to their learning in 2020 and 2021. 

"The students have worked so hard throughout this time, supported by their strongly committed teachers and superb sixth form leadership team."

Notable achievements include Phoebe Salter, who attained A*AA and is off to study Fine Art at Norwich, and Matias Pinho who attained A*A*A in Biology, Chemistry and Maths. 

 

At The Cooper School, head student Noel Chacko was successful in his application to study Medicine at the University of Birmingham.

He said: “After two very challenging years, I’m overjoyed that I’ve fulfilled my childhood dream of getting into Medical School.

"I want to give a huge thank you to all my teachers for their support, and most importantly my parents (my best friends) for their sacrifices and hard-work which I will never forget.”

Headteacher of The Cooper School Dr. Rob Whannel said: “We have been so impressed by this Year 13 cohort throughout their time with us.

"It has been a pleasure to see these young people grow in both their academic ability and as a caring, kind and thoughtful group of students.

"We’ve been impressed by this year group’s determination, resilience, enthusiasm and academic curiosity; the skills that these students have developed will serve them well in whatever the future may hold.

"These great results are richly deserved and we wish all of our year 13 students the best of luck for their next steps.”
