A TEENAGER from Wallingford who was inspired by her English teacher has got into Cambridge University.

Bea Thorne, 17, studied History, English Literature, and Maths at Wallingford School, in St George’s Road, and received two A*s and an A this morning (Thursday, August 15).

She has accepted her place to study English at Cambridge University, starting next month.

The teen, who described herself as ‘always being a major reader’, said she was inspired to study English by her year nine teacher, Ms Hands, who has since left the school.

“She was inspiring to me,” said Bea. “I’ve never really known what I was drawn to but it she pushed me in English – that’s the path I’m on.”

After informing her parents of her results, Bea describes her grandmother ‘bursting into tears’ upon finding out about her Cambridge acceptance.

“That’s partly because my grandfather went to Cambridge,” said Bea.

Her friend, Lola Gunn, 18, achieved three A*s in maths, chemistry, and biology and just missed out on a Cambridge acceptance as her UCAT exam had run out and needs to be retaken.

She will be working as a receptionist for a doctor's surgery in Benson before re-applying.

“I’ve always been interested in the body and biology and working in the hub has shown me I love working with people so it makes sense,” she said.
