The founder and executive chairman of a Cowley-based manufacturing firm has announced his retirement after 50 years.
Dr John M. Neill of Unipart Group announced his decision to retire earlier today (August 14).
He said his time at the firm has been "one of the greatest honours of my life".
His professional life began at General Motors where he quickly ascended the ranks to become the youngest overseas executive.
In 1974, he joined the British Leyland parts division, when it was rebranded as Unipart, becoming the firm's managing director in 1977.
Having led the company's management buyout in 1987, he took on various roles over the years, becoming the company's executive chairman in October 2022.
Dr Neill will retire from daily operations on August 31, but will remain involved in the business until November and will retain his position as the largest individual shareholder.
Since 1974, he has helped to transform Unipart into an enterprise with a global footprint in 21 countries and more than 12,000 staff.
Under his leadership, the company reported a £1 billion turnover in 2023, alongside a significant increase in profitability,
Dr Neill said: "Working at Unipart has been one of the greatest honours of my life.
"The relationships I’ve built, the challenges we’ve overcome, and the milestones we’ve achieved together will always hold a special place in my heart.
"I am deeply grateful to my colleagues, business partners, and all our stakeholders for their unwavering support throughout my journey."
He continued: "Over the past 50 years, I have had the privilege of working with extraordinary individuals whose loyalty and dedication have been instrumental in transforming Unipart from its early days as the parts division of British Leyland.
“Together, we defied seemingly insurmountable odds. When I joined, the parts business was in terminal decline, and it was clear that only radical innovation could secure our future.
"I take immense pride in what we have accomplished together. The loyalty, commitment, and tireless efforts of our people have sustained this company for decades, and none of us would be here without them."
Dr Neill's career achievements include the creation of the Unipart brand in the 1970s and 1980s, leading the management and employee buyout from British Leyland and establishing Britain’s first corporate university, the Unipart 'U'.
Dr Neill has also served on various boards, taken part in government working groups and received a CBE in 1994 for his services to the industry.
He added: “As we celebrate our 50th anniversary, I feel that, if I am to make the most of seeing my grandchildren grow up and forge lasting bonds with them, the window to do so is now.”
