Calls are being made for police to put up incident notices after a woman in her twenties was sexually assaulted whilst on a walk with her baby in a village near Wallingford. 

Nina Sarpong, who runs the sports shop Runwize in St Mary’s Street, is calling for there to be more awareness from police following the incident.

Thames Valley Police is appealing for witnesses to the sexual assault, which happened on Saturday, August 10 between 9.30pm and 10.30pm.

A woman in her twenties was out on a walk with her baby along a path that runs parallel to the campsite of Bridge Villa on The Street.

Police say a man followed the woman, approached her and then sexually assaulted her over clothing before running off.

The offender is described as white, aged 30-35, no taller than 5ft 8ins, of big build, with short dark brown hair.

Owners of Bridge Villa Camping and Caravan Park have declined to comment. 

Ms Sarpong started a female-only running club in 2022 following the murder of Ashling Murphy which prompted safety concerns for women running alone.

Ms Sarpong told the Oxford Mail she has seen "no increase" of police presence in town and that she has not seen any police incident notices around the area. 

She said: "I think the police should have incident notices around the area.

"Particularly girls and young women need to be made aware, it’s very close to the river and pool a popular hang out for young people and a cut through to the housing estate.

"It is a popular trail running route that I run all the time and a popular dog walking route that my friend uses early morning.

"I asked a friend who found a post on Wallingford Piper about the incident, I am not on this forum.

"It very concerning that this was the only place it was mentioned, as not everyone is on social media."

Speaking on the safety of women in public, Ms Sarpong said: "I would always say to women be aware of your environment."

Detective Sergeant Isaac van den Eshof said: “I understand incidents such as these can be concerning but we are investigating it as a priority.

“We also have an increased police presence in the area as a result so please speak to a uniformed officer if you have any concerns.

“I am appealing for any witnesses to this sexual assault to please come forward.

Thames Valley Police and Crime Commissioner, Matthew Barber, has been contacted for comment.
