A Witney primary school said an emotional goodbye to two long-serving members of staff at a special assembly last month.

Lindsay Croston and Jo Ellis have, between them, worked at Witney Community Primary School for more than half a century.

The pair's contribution to school life was recognised at a celebration attended by staff past and present, pupils, parents and governors at the Hailey Road primary.

Mrs Croston has been a teacher at the school for 23 years and assistant headteacher for the past five years.

Mark Peacey, headteacher, described her as a "truly outstanding teacher who has worked tirelessly to ensure that every single child in our school has the support and encouragement they need to realise their full potential".

He added: "Lindsay is a passionate advocate of reading and has changed the sporting landscape at Witney CP, especially for girls. We owe her so much and she leaves with our love and gratitude."

Mrs Croston said: "I have had the pleasure of teaching at this fabulous school for the past 23 years and the whole school community will hold a special place in my heart for ever."

Mrs Ellis has been a teaching partner at the school for 29 years.

Mr Peacey said: "We will miss Jo enormously. She is an amazing artist, designer, cook and hoarder of clutter.

"Jo is the school Womble, always rummaging in skips for treasures that can be recycled or repurposed –  a truly green champion for almost three decades."

In recognition of their service, the school has named cups for pupil achievement after the pair – the Croston Cup for perseverance and progress in reading and the Ellis Cup for passion and enjoyment of art.
