Members of the Oxford Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament gathered in the city centre on the anniversary of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

The group gathered at Bonn Square in Oxford yesterday (Tuesday, August 6) at 11am to remember those who died 79 years ago.

The atomic bombing of Hiroshima destroyed the city and killed 140,000 people at the end of World War Two.

The US dropped a second bomb three days later on Nagasaki, killing another 70,000, causing Japan to surrender on August 15, 1945.

The demonstration saw speakers from Japan talk to the crowd and peace songs sung by the Sea-green Singers and Red Kites.

Many survivors of the bombings have lasting injuries and illnesses resulting from the explosions and radiation exposure and have faced discrimination in Japan.
